Conditionals Lesson Plan – Build a Town!


This lesson is mostly for intermediate learners but you can play around and tailor it to any level!

Worksheets won’t be necessary but students should have their notebook ready for any vocabulary you think is appropriate.

Warm up

Ask students which countries or cities across the world (or in their home country) have the best;

  • Education system, Crime rates, Infrastructure, Social services, and any more that you can think of!
  • What do you like the most about the town you live in, why?
  • Do you think that your city could do more for the people that live here? How so?


Students should imagine that they are building a new town and must decide how best to run it. Focus on the following categories and allow them to branch out and expand the topic.

  • What laws would you impose on the citizens of your town?

  • What would the most serious punishment be? For what crime?
  • Is there anything in your country that’s illegal and wouldn’t be in your town? Vice versa?
  • Would you have people to enforce the laws?
  • What kind of education system would you have?

  • Would all children have to go to school?
  • Would you have the option of private and public education?
  • Would university be free?
  • What would the structure of your government be?

  • Would your town be ruled by a democratic system?
  • Would you have a monarch?
  • How would you avoid any common political problems that your country faces? (Corruption, Sex Scandals, etc…)

Other Topics to Include

  • Religion (Dance around this question if you think your students might be sensitive)
  • Employment
  • Healthcare
  • Travel
  • Taxes
  • Transport

Try to introduce at least some of the questions in a conditional format. For example;

First Conditional  – “If you impose this law, how will people react?”

Second – “If you had your own town, how would you run it?”

Third – “If you had been elected in the last general election, what would you have done differently?”
